It was November 21, 1980 when a fire broke out in the kitchen area of an eatery that was not yet open on the casino level of the original MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Today it is Bally's Las Vegas. But on this day, almost 43 years ago, the MGM Grand brought us one of the greatest hotel tragedies in the history of America. Eighty-seven people died as a result of this fire (many from inhaling the toxic smoke as it spread through the building) which spread all through the casino area and blew out the front entrance in a matter of minutes. A combination of poor construction on the building as well as a poorly planned out evacuation system led to mass chaos.
