Lo que cambia ligeramente las estrategias en las batallas, pero a pesar de estos cambios el juego está plagado de bugs y resulta incomprensible que el tiempo transcurrido entre sus predecesores (dos años), no se haya pulido, el juego sigue siendo igual de lento que Red y Blue, y no aprovecha el Super Game Boy a plenitud. El modo multijugador también incluye novedades como el nuevo modo de coliseo copa Pikachu y la posibilidad de desbloquear un minijuego en Playa Pikachu si enseñas Surf a tu Pikachu mediante el juego Pokémon Stadium, al sur de ciudad Fucsia.
